The Napa and Vintage football teams had their final tuneup before next week’s openers on Friday night at Napa Memorial Stadium.
In the first matchups of the night Napa faced Freedom of Oakley, while Vintage faced Las Lomas-Walnut Creek.
“There’s a big 6-3, 220 pound running back, the receiver was a beat, great quarterback play, and they hit hard and they were aggressive, so that’s exactly what we needed to kind of prep us going into the season,” Vintage coach Dylan Leach said of facing Las Lomas in their first scrimmage.
In the final matchups of the scrimmage it was Vintage against Freedom and Napa against Las Lomas.
“Yeah, lots of speed right,” Leach said of facing the Falcons in their final scrimmage of the night. “That was a great test. I mean there was a reason why we wanted to get these two teams in here. To see a lot of speed and they’re a great football team, so really excited about having the opportunity to play them.”
“They were great competition, you know,” Napa coach Tom Petithomme said of Freedom and Las Lomas. “The best part about it is they’re going to make us better, you know we’re going to learn from that (experience), we know what it feels like to get hit really hard now, so the next time we get hit really hard it’s not going to affect us like it did tonight.”
Overall on the night the Crushers looked good on both sides of the ball with their first team.
“I always hesitate without seeing film, right about how well we played or how well we didn’t play, but I liked our will to get to the ball, I thought we were aggressive, I don’t think we back down from anybody, so those are all positives things and we’ve just got to you know keep going with those positive notes and make ourselves improve.”
Vintage also took a look at sophomore Jacob Aaron under center a little bit on the evening.
“Jacob’s a tough competitor you know,” Leach explained of the sophomore. “He’s got a lot of work to do, but we know that and he’s up for the challenge, so I’m looking forward to his growth over the next three years.”
Napa split the reps up at quarterback on the night between Isaiah Newton and Gunner Schoeps.
Both teams will begin the season on the road next Friday night. Napa will be in Turlock to face Pitman, and Vintage will face Wood in Vacaville. Both games will start at 7:15 p.m.
