The 2018 Napa Valley College women’s golf team is very young, but it doesn’t mean they won’t compete in the 2018 season.

The team’s only returner is Desiree Ramos, who will be the Storm’s lead golfer on the season. However, only having one returner isn’t something that Napa Valley College golf coach Bob Freschi is worried about due to experience and success Ramos had last year.

The five newest golfers to the team this year are Jordan Lowe, Isabella Ash, Ruthie Bowen, Peyton Oller, and Baylee Vyenielo. The full roster can be viewed here.

“Yes, we have one returning player in Desiree Ramos, and she’s going to be the leader of our team since she’s a returning player,” Freschi said of how young the team is. “She came in the top 18 of our conference last season, so I expect her to move on up in the ranks, and have a solid season for the Storm.”

The roster this season is also full of lots of players from Vacaville and in specific Vacaville High School. Three of the six golfers on the team are Vacaville High graduates, which is half the team.

“I think Vaca High is the best program around in our area, so of course I want to get the best golfers out of that area as well as Napa County. It just hasn’t happened yet, but it will, or Sonoma County as well,” Freschi explained of the strong presence Vacaville has on the roster this season.

“We enjoy them both,” Freschi explained of playing hosting two tournaments at two different courses in Napa County. “It’s getting to know the course and they’ve got to play each hole to the best of their ability and they’ve got to know the hole and what we practice and get out of there is the ability to have course management.”

Other tournaments that will be tough will be the North/South Invitational, which is hosted by Santa Barbara City College on September 23rd and 24th in Morro Bay. The reason why the tournament holds so much importance is because Morro Bay Golf Course is where the California Community College Athletic Association state championships will be held at in November.

“We are going to a little preseason invitational down in Morro Bay because that’s where the state championships are held, so we’re going to play at a tournament down there in September and hopefully we go back again in November,” Freschi optimistically said of the North/South invitational.

Last season Napa Valley was strong in their short game, which saved them in a lot of holes.

“Last year out short game was phenomenal, so we were able to scramble and get up and down near the green, which will probably be the case again this year,” Freschi added on what his team will be successful in this year.
