YOUNTVILLE-The last few years Napa Valley Baseball Club has had a good track record in the annual Napa Valley Fourth of July Invitational.

That good showing continued on Thursday as the defending runner up whallopped the San Francisco Cardinals 19-2 in a game that lasted five innings.

The start of the game made it look as though NVBC (13-15-1) were going to have their hands full as they allowed a pair of runs to cross in the top of the first.

“Offense was on fire today,” NVBC 19-and-under coach Reed Oster explained.

But, once the second inning came around it was as though they had a completely different team. They pushed seven runs across in the inning due in large part to drawing lots of walks.

“We strung together a couple of hits, and then our guys became more patient with runners in scoring position, with the pitcher on the spot, which is really good,” Oster added. “So our guys just ran good at-bats all day and we just circled the bases.”

The second inning was highlighted by back-to-back RBI doubles by Davide Migotto and Nick Schuttish.

In the third inning NVBC made a statement by putting up and eye-popping 12 runs in the inning. The inning was also walk-aided like the second, but Napa did get a pair of doubles in the inning. One of the doubles came from Reid McCaffrey who went 3-for-4 with two singles, a double, six RBIs, and three runs on the day to lead Napa.

“It was really fun,” McCaffrey explained of his performance. “We’ve just got to keep the little things good and we’ve just got to grind.”

The other double of the second came from Migotto who also had a good day going 2-for-3 with two doubles, a hit-by-pitch, three RBIs, and three runs. NVBC’s other top hitter was Schuttish who went 1-for-2 with a double, hit-by-pitch, walk, RBI, and two runs.

Jayge Campbell got the win for Napa on the day. The soon-to-be senior went all five innings, striking out five and walking five, all while giving up five hits.

“Jayge threw great today,” Oster explained. “He had a rough first inning, but he settled down, and started attacking the zone. Yeah, he did a great job.”

Both teams will be back in action on Friday. SF will face San Bruno VFW at 9 a.m. at Justin-Siena, while Napa Valley Baseball Club will face the River City Outlaws at 4:45 p.m. at Cleve Borman Field in Yountville.
