Vintage’s Alyssa Andrews awarded scholarship from 2018 West Coast Jamboree

It’s no secret that last year was a year full of accolades for the Vintage girls basketball team. 

However, yet another award has been given to an individual on the team, Alyssa Andrews. She was awarded a $2,500 scholarship by the West Coast Jamboree. Andrews was one of 24 finalists up for the awarded by a committee including West Coast Jamboree founder David Jackson. The scholarship can be used for verifiable and approved college expenses.

The Crushers had a 20-8 record last season, to go along with a 11-1 Vine Valley Athletic League mark. Vintage was able to win back-to-back league titles for the first time in school history last year

They lost in the first round of the CIF North Coast Section playoffs to San Ramon Valley-Danville on February 12th

Andrews played a big part in the Crushers run to the annual VVAL title as she averaged 15.3 points per game, 6.4 rebounds per game, 2.8 assists per game, and 2.2 steals per game. Andrews led the team in points per game during the season. During her senior season Andrews also played every game. On December 10th, Andrews sored her 1,000th varsity point in Vintage’s 54-39 over Alhambra-Martinez.

She also played an important part in the Crushers biggest win of the season during Big Game girls basketball two on January 26th. In that game, she had 26 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Crushers to a 61-56 double overtime Big Game win over rival Napa. That game was also named number one in the Napa Sports News top ten games countdown of the 2018-19 school year.

In fall of 2019 Andrews will head to the University of California at Santa Barbara where she’ll major in Environmental Science.  

“Being able to participate in a tournament like the West Coast Jamboree was extremely beneficial for not only myself but my team as well because of the crazy competition you get to see,” Andrews said in a press release. “To be selected from a group so big and so  deserving makes me extremely proud of everything I’ve done up to this point. Next year I plan on studying environmental science at UC Santa Barbara and I am so grateful for the chance to continue my education with the help of this scholarship.”

During the West Coast Jamboree, the Crushers went 2-1 with wins against Los Angeles CES and Alhambra. Their lone loss during the event was to Turlock. They competed in the Quartz division of the tournament.  

The other recipients of the scholarships were Klara Astrom of Pinewood-Los Altos Hills and Paige Lyons of Eureka. 

“I am so pleased and proud of the success of the Scholarship Program these first three years, and I’m looking forward to the possibility of it being expanded and including a needs based criteria,” Jackson remarked in the press release. “This has become part of what the West Coast Jamboree is all about. On behalf of the West Cost Jamboree, congratulations to our 2018 recipients, Alyssa, Klara and Paige.”
