Starting fast is always going to help in a game that has many ebbs and flows as basketball does.
Prolific Prep did exactly that in their 136-64 pounding of West Coast Prep-Seattle on Friday night at Napa Valley College.
The Crew (3-0) grabbed a 22-1 lead early in the first half. Before that, they had gained a 17-0 lead and were well in control of the contest.
“We want to get fat, we want to get after teams and we want to jump them early,” Prolific Prep first-year coach Joey Fuca explained. “I think our transition offense was really good tonight. We fed off our turnovers. So yeah, any game we want to start off with a fast start.”
Senior guard Nimari Burnett also agreed that the fast start helped them.
“We’re definitely trying to blow teams out of the water this year,” Burnett added. “We have the talent to do so. You know, respectfully, we feel like we can do that against any team.”
Another key to victory for Prolific Prep was the fact that they had three guys score over 20 points.
Jaden Jones ended the night with 26 points and seven rebounds. Jalen Green also added 26 points on the night to go along with two rebounds. Burnett also ended the night with 26 points to go along with three rebounds.
“We definitely want to put up numbers,” said Burnett who will announce his college commitment on Tuesday. “We want to hold teams to under 60 (points) especially in a long game like this, so it’s good to put up huge numbers on offense.”
“We have a lot of weapons offensively,” Fuca added. “ But more importantly, we have very unselfish kids. And so three guys with more than 26 points is just a testament to how our unselfish our guys are.”
University of Illinois bound Coleman Hawkins also added 15 points and four rebounds.
“That’s definitely good,” Burnett explained. “He’s definitely one of our best players on our team and he has a lot of potential. He’s getting better every day.”
Leading the way on the glass was Frank Anselum who gobbled up 12 rebounds all while pitching in 10 points.
“Frank is (an) unbelievable rim runner, shot blocker, and rebounder,” Fuca said of the night’s top rebounder. “He’s a very, very elite rebounder. We’re looking for him to do some big things this year. And he leads us on the defensive side and he’ll be our anchor throughout the entire year.”
After a 6 p.m. game against GSA Prep on Saturday, the Crew will begin their Grind Session schedule where they won’t play in Napa again till January.
