If there’s one thing that sucks is just laying an egg in a game that was very winnable. It just is brutal because those are games that could hurt when the season is over.
So in Wednesday night’s second game of a Bay Valley Conference doubleheader, it was rough when Solano beat Napa Valley 62-47.
The worst part of it all was the fact that the majority of the issues were self-inflicted wounds instead of errors forced by Solano.
“We just didn’t play well,” Napa Valley College head coach Paul DeBolt said. “We didn’t play with composure. We didn’t play together. We had a bad game.”
It also didn’t help that the Falcons (6-7, 1-0 BVC) jumped out to an 11-0 lead before the Storm could even score their first points in the game. When Napa Valley did finally score, half of the first quarter had already elapsed. For the most part, that was the difference in the game.
Another thing that didn’t help was the fact that it felt like Solano could always get a three-pointer when they needed it to keep the momentum. The thing that’s crazy is they made just 5 of 15 shots from range in the contest.
The Storm (6-5, 0-1 BVC) were able to cut the deficit to four points once and five points three times in the game. They could never get any closer than that. Shooting 23.7% from the field is never a helpful thing either. You could say the same about an astounding 26 turnovers.
“I spent the entire game trying to find a group of players who could play together and who couldn’t,” DeBolt continued. “We never had a single run. We had a little tiny run at one point where after we got way down we cut it to seven. But there’s just a disastrous performance by us coaches, players, everything.”
One other sign that things were a bit out of whack for the hosts was the fact that they struggled to get their two double-digit scorers.
However, their leading scorer in the game was Rose Jamison. The freshman ended the game with a team-high of 13 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and a blocked shot. Jamison was better after the break when she scored 10 of her points. She also made 6 of her 7 shots from the free-throw line in this one.
After that, it was Suraya Lloyd who finished with 10 points, 8 rebounds, 1 steal, and a blocked shot. Lloyd was better in the first half when she scored 6 points. The freshman also made 1 of 3 foul shots.
Besides those two the other scorers were Brooklyn Giles (7 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and a blocked shot), Addison Alsbury (7 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals), Daralonie Sykes (5 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals), Maizy Armstrong-Brown (3 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist), and Alliyah Fernandez (2 points, 1 rebound 1 steal).
Coming into the game, the Storm had been on a three-game winning streak. Now, it will be back to the drawing board to get a win in their next game.
“We just get back to work,” DeBolt said as to how to go forward from this game. “We’ve got a lot of work to do. Now we know some things that we have to work on again. We’ll do it. There’s no quit in anybody, we’ll just keep plugging away.”
Napa Valley will now get to enjoy Christmas before hitting the hardwood again. Their next game will be next Wednesday at 7:30 PM when they visit Contra Costa.
