It’s generally hard to score over 1,000 points in a high school career. But doing it at the junior college when an athlete is there for just a few years is almost unheard of.

On Wednesday night at Storm Gym, Rose Jamison eclipsed this major milestone as she led the Napa Valley College women past Los Medanos-Pittsburg, 78-41, in a Bay Valley Conference game.

In the game, Jamison finished with a game-leading 27 points and 11 rebounds with a double-double. She scored 16 points in the second half and made 7 of 8 free throws. This was the exact number of points she needed to get to the mark after being at 973 points before the game.

On top of all of this, Jamison had never done anything like this in her life. Even in high school, she never scored this many points in a career.

“I’ve never had 1000 points out of school in my career, not even high school,” Jamison explained. “So definitely means a lot to me to prove how far I’ve come and how much I’ve developed my skill, but also means a lot to just leave my mark at the school. Napa did a lot for me. So it just feels good to leave my mark here.”

She also does this after coming off of a 2023-24 season where she missed most of the year due to a knee injury and worked her way back.

Because of this, she was presented with the game ball after the game. She is also the first player in NVC women’s basketball history to reach this milestone.

“Rose is just such a genuine person,” DeBolt added. “She’s a great player. It couldn’t happen to a nicer person and to a more deserving person. She’s the first one, I think, in the history of the women’s program here to get 1000 points. She’s just a role model in everything. You know, great great person, great player, great student, great teammate.”

It also became a lot easier to get to the milestone after Napa Valley (15-10, 11-2 BVC) was able to take control of the game in the first half. In the game, they were able to go on a huge 26-0 run, which bridged two quarters and moved the lead to 31.

“When we played this team the first time, it was a close game,” DeBolt explained of the first meeting. “I mean, they had a couple more players. We didn’t have Helena (White) and Jazmine (Fontilla) got in foul trouble. So we’re at a place where we have to hold serve in the conference standings, and that’s what we were trying to do, and we played really well defensively. Got a lot of good stops. We still missed a lot of shots, we still turned the ball over, but we were aggressive with the ball offensively, and we were mixing up our defenses and doing things defensively.”

Also helping the game go a lot better was the fact that the Storm had four players total in double figures. One of them was Jazmine Fontilla. She finished with 20 points and 6 rebounds. Fontilla scored 10 points in each half and made 6 of 10 free throws.

Ashley Torres finished with 13 points and 7 rebounds as well. She scored 9 of those in the first half and made 3 of 4 free throws. This was one of her best games of the season.

“Ashley has really come on lately,” DeBolt pointed out. and she is just an outstanding guard who is getting a chance to play regularly and is learning to make good decisions on the court. And it’s not just the points, it’s everything else that she does defensively.”

Rounding out the quartet of scorers with double-digits was Arianna Aguilar. She scored 12 points and added 6 rebounds. She scored 6 in each half and made a pair of free throws as well.

Others scoring for Napa Valley in the game were Marticia Pollard (4 points, 8 rebounds) and Helena White (2 points, 2 rebounds).

With the win, the Storm maintained their hold on second place in the conference. They will now have 10 days off before their next game against Solano on February 14th at 7:30 pm. They won’t play on Friday as originally scheduled and will be given a win automatically as Contra Costa forfeited the game.
