The Justin-Siena girls basketball team began Vine Valley Athletic League play with a convincing 48-29 win over American Canyon on Tuesday night.

In the first quarter the Braves (4-5, 1-0 VVAL) jumped out to a 16-0 lead, which was due in large part by Ashlee Whittemore scoring six points in the first period of play.

American Canyon (5-6, 0-1 VVAL) made a few good runs throughout the game, but could never get the lead inside of single digits. The Wolves shot 20% from the field on the night.

“We had great energy and purpose from the start of the game and that really helped us jump out to the big lead,” Justin-Siena coach Andrew Bettencourt said. I thought we did a good job defensively and held them in check for most of the game, while offensively we were able to hit a few outside shots which definitely got us going. Definitely nice to get the first league win under our belt.”

The Braves were led by Whittemore, who had 20 points and three rebounds. Sarah Reynolds also added 11 points on the night.

Justin-Siena will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Santa Rosa to face Maria Carillo at 7:30 p.m., while American Canyon will host Vintage on Thursday night at 7 p.m. On Tuesday night Vintage won their league opener over Casa Grande.
