The Napa High baseball team hosted their former league foe Wood-Vacaville in a Saturday morning game.

But for the Grizzlies they were lucky just to avoid being no-hit in their second game of the new season as they lost 10-0.

Napa’s lone hit came in the bottom of the sixth when senior outfielder Nathan Avila hit a single into right field.

“What it comes down to is where’s the offense,” Napa coach Jason Chatham rhetorically asked. “We had a pretty clear pitch sequence. We knew to a large degree what we were going to get. There was a consistent sequence. We were not hunting the fastball the way that we are training our guys to do.”

In the sixth the Grizzlies (0-2) had their lone chance to push a run across as the bases were loaded with two outs, but Austin Michie struck out after long battle filled with a bunch of foul balls.

Although the score became lopsided when the Wildcats (1-0) pushed six runs across in the fourth inning, the game was relatively close the rest of the way.

Omar Gonzalez took the loss for Napa. Over 3+ innings of work he struck out 1 and walked nobody. He gave up five runs, but only two of them were earned.

“We talked right there (postgame huddle) after the game. We had five errors in the infield,” Chatham said of all the unearned runs that crossed. “That’s not going to happen. We believe in the guys that are out there. Those are routine ground balls that we’re not going to make errors on.”

Napa is scheduled to play again on Tuesday when they host Vanden-Fairfield, but with the weather forecasting rain all next week they could have trouble getting games in.

“Really we have Monday’s practice to work with,” Chatham said of having to deal with a forecast that includes a good amount of rain according to Accuweather.com.
