There are times when in order to get better you just need to face some really stiff competition.

That’s exactly what happened to the Vintage girls’ basketball team in their season-opening 84-21 loss to Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa.

“You know, I like the hard path,” Vintage coach Joe Donohoe explained. “So that’s why we’re putting Cardinal Newman and Dublin early in the year.  I’m not saying that we’re at that level, but why not? You know, go after the tough ones and see where you’re at. That game made us better whether we lost by I don’t even know what the final was.”

Even though there score doesn’t reflect it, the second half ended up being better than the first half for the Crushers (0-1). It also helped that sophomore Eden Wood started to find it in the second half as well.

“She’s really improved a lot,” Donohoe said of the sophomore who ended the night with a team-high nine points while grabbing four rebounds. “That’s why I brought her up last year as a freshman. She’s got something going on that by the time she gets as good as she can get here, she can be really good.”

Vintage’s other points came from Ellie Savage and Perla Bautista who each added three points apiece and both had a rebound. Olivia Hedberg and Mo Groves both added two points.

Leading the way on the glass was junior Victoria Solorio who brought in seven rebounds, with two points. Olivia and Kater Kerr both grabbed three boards as well.

“She gets a lot of rebounds,” Donohoe said of Solorio. “She’s working hard.”

The good news for the Crushers is that they will have a very short turnaround until their next game. After an off-day tomorrow, they’ll host Armijo-Fairfield at 7 p.m. on Friday.
